The birth of OutSight
After 30 years of building businesses, brands, and products from within, leading teams, navigating the complexity, and getting things to market, I've decided to do something different!
Starting today, I'm launching my own consultancy, OutSight Design Group. But this isn't your typical product design firm. I've spent basically my whole career working on physical products, and the process from start to finish is expensive and F-ing hard! No offense to my UX friends, but unlike software, you can't just patch a bad decision overnight. And what I've learned, over and over, is that the end object itself is rarely the real problem. It's the misalignment between the teams creating it and the business objectives behind it, and pretty much everything in between. That's what we're here to fix.
I've seen this play out with about every type of company I’ve worked with: there is almost always a gap between what a brand promises and what its products actually deliver. And it’s often because the teams behind them are doing their best work in the wrong direction, because they lost the plot to the strategy that should be steering them. That's the work I love doing. Helping companies align their brand, their business, and their physical products, and building the teams, the principles, and the processes to execute on it.
My career purpose as an Industrial Designer has always been clear to me: to solve problems for people. But the design of a product itself is only one small part of that equation. So now I want to help companies address the messy infrastructure that wastes their time and their people. My goal is not awards or notoriety, it’s just to fix what's broken and leave behind something better that runs without us.
More to come. But if any of this sounds familiar, I'd love to talk!
